Music B i o g r a p h y

As a product of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) High School, Oren has been involved in music for most of his life.  The first string instrument he learnt was a ukulele.  Later on, at the direction of his oldest friend and then band leader André Braithwaite, he decided to take up guitar so as to be a better fit in the band which was to be reconvened once he and Mr. Braithwaite returned from studying abroad.  On that note, Oren walked  into a pawn shop in California, bought a guitar, a book of chords and a book of scales for guitar, went home and taught himself how to play over the next few years.

Oren then started playing guitar as a backdrop for his style of poetry and shortly thereafter, developed a passion for the instrument.  He picked up the art of poetry and songwriting while away at university and has continued to nurture these talents as he always found a sense of relief in writing. Most of the pieces written come directly out of his "book of life" as things unfold so in a sense, it is a rare glimpse into his diary; a rare glimpse into his soul.

Upon returning to the BVI, Oren had been a part of various music groups for the purpose of backing up international acts that frequented the BVI mainly for the international Calypso competition held on Tortola during the summertime festivities.  Most of the combo section of this very band has officially teamed up to form the band Blue Essence.  This band is now sought after to provide backing music for international acts interested in performing in the BVI.  Oren has had the wonderful privilege of sharing a stage with world class acts such as Barron, Mighty Sparrow, David Rudder, Ken Boothe, Carlene Davis, Tanya Stephens, Mike Phillips, Kevin Robinson, The Drifters, The Spinners, Kim Burrell, Fantasia, Joss Stone, Boyz II Men, Percy Sledge and John Legend to name a few.   Oren currently manages the affairs of Blue Essence.

In 2011, Oren decided to spread his wings beyond the Virgin Islands and headed to London to test the waters.  In 2012, he was pleasantly surprised when his London activities kicked off with two concerts at the BT River of Music Festival. The concerts were held at Trafalgar Square and Tower of London where he performed alongside artists from every Caribbean country and Territory for a musical production themed Caribbean Soul which was directed by internationally acclaimed trumpeter Kevin Robinson.  The event, the largest international concert ever to be held, brought together artists and musicians from around the world representing the 204 countries competing in the Olympics.

Oren has had the unique opportunity to perform at the Olympic Village where he entertained the athletes of the 2012 Olympic Games and other high profile persons and dignitaries in London.  Showing his versatility as a poet as well as a singer/songwriter, he also participated in London's Poetry Parnassus which was the largest international gathering of poets from the 204 Olympic countries, where he again represented the BVI.  The weeklong event, culminated in the presentation of a book of global poetry titled ‘The World Record’ where Oren’s poem ‘Sharks In Sharp Suits’ is published alongside pieces by world renowned Nobel Laureates including Wole Soyinka and Seamus Heaney.  Oren also has pieces published in V.I. Callaloo: Poems from the Caribbean.
